Offering A New Fall 2015 Language Course

The Skwomesh Language Academy is proud to announce the offering a one time fall language course to community members of the Squamish Nation and Tsleil-Waututh Nation.

Members of the Squamish Nation and Tsleil-Waututh Nation communities are invited to register for this unique and new language course.

This course provides the foundation for future fluency in the Squamish Language. You will learn key fundamentals for understanding the asking of questions and answering on a few topics in past, present and future tense. Then you will acquire speaking skills for common contexts and situations, and learn individual and group techniques for successful language acquisition.

The course is eight 2.5 day weekend intensive sessions (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) happening every other week from September to December 2015 on for a total of 120 hours of instruction in the language.


The course starts in Fall 2015 on September 11th, 2015 and ends December 20th. Classes happen every other weekend at the following times:

FRIDAY: 6:00PM-9:00PM
SATURDAY: 12:30PM– 6:00PM
SUNDAY: 12:30PM– 6:00PM

The course tuition is $250 to be paid in full by registration deadline July 31st, 2015. Cash or cheque accepted.

Bursaries are available for low-income earners as well.

What will I learn?

By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following:

  • Confidently ask and answer yes & no questions in past, present and future tense about yourself and others.
  • Understand commands for giving directions on a few topics (making food, tea, coffee; how to get to an event, etc.)
  • Give an introduction of yourself and others
  • Interpret vocabulary used in social and ceremonial situation.

How will I learn?

  • Interactive language lessons that incorporate the physical as well as the intellectual.
  • Immersion-based activities
  • Class assignments
  • Listening labs of language recordings

Who should take this course?

This course is open to anyone who would like to not just learn the language but acquire language-speaking skills. It is suitable for learners who do not have previous experience with the language. Squamish Nation and Tsleil-Waututh community members will be prioritized for enrollment in the course.

How will I be evaluated?

You will receive in-class assignment, guidance, and feedback. Learners will be given oral profiency evaluations to benchmark growth in knowledge, skill, and progress throughout the course.

Textbooks and learning materials

Materials are provided and included in the tuition fee.

How much does it cost?
